Marriage Mentoring at Parklawn Assembly of God

From the beginning of creation God made male and female and choose marriages to
display His glory. He choose marriage to symbolize the relationship between Jesus Christ and His bride, the church and Jesus choose a wedding at Cana of Galilee to perform His first miracle by turning ordinary water into sweet wine. He still works miracles in marriages and families today. Our prayer is that Parklawn's Marriage Mentors can assist you in enjoying the sweetness God intended your marriage to contain.

Pastor Walter and Judy Harvey are committed to building Strong Familiies and valuing marriages as part of the vision at Parklawn Assembly of God. Parklawn is part of the Milwaukee Area Community Marriage Agreement to promote, educate, and support marriages within our church and community.

What are Marriage Mentors? (Couples Serving Couples)

A marriage mentor is a relatively joyous, mature couple in a solid marriage. They are couples who have experienced life transitions and are willing to share their journey with others.

Goals of Mentoring:

  • To assign and discuss relationship assessments and help the couple grown in key relational areas.
  • To build empathy with the couple and assure them that marriage struggles are common to all marriages; and, if properly understood the difficulties work to build character and stronger relationships.
  • To model a healthy marriage.
  • To share martial wisdom with the couple so they can avoid pitfalls and amplify successes.
  • To work with couples to self-discover solutions to their relationship problems.
  • To help pre-marriage couples discover relationship strengths and area of growth.
  • To help pre-marriage couples build relationship skills.
  • To encourage spiritual growth.

Blessings of Marriage Mentors

Marriage mentors are a blessing to the couple they mentor, to themselves, to the church and to the community.

Those blessings come in several ways:

  • Mentors have time to invest in the couple they mentor.
  • Mentors display unconditional love.
  • The mentor couple hold the mentored couple accountable in a loving way.
  • Mentor couples provide wisdom from God's Word and from their own life experience.
  • Mentoring creates two-for-one growth.
  • Marriage mentors are effective.

What Marriage Mentors Are NOT!

  • Marriage mentors ARE NOT counselors or therapists.
  • Marriage mentors DO NOT replace the clergy.
  • Marriage mentors ARE NOT alone.
  • Marriage mentors ARE NOT available at all hours of the day and night.
  • Marriage mentors ARE NOT necessarily friends for life with mentoree couples.
